"This project was borne out of a challenge to create a basemap with a strong aesthetic. It was near the end of the MLB regular season when I was thinking about this, and the idea of a baseball aesthetic made a lot of sense. Because of the many shared colors between a baseball game and the natural earth, I chose to lean into the similarities and create a more naturalistic take on a baseball aesthetic. I was able to integrate the textures of the well mown grass and the fabric of the powder blue jerseys, the stark contrasting colors of the dirt and the painted lines, and typefaces of a Rawlings baseball all into the map. This basemap was made using MapBox Studio. I formatted the final product into this web scrollmap format to show off the variety of looks across different geographies and scales."
